KU STUDENTS HOST VIGIL IN RESPONSE TO RECENT GLBT TRAGEDIES ON NATIONAL COMING OUT DAY
“Step Up and Step Out" is not only a vigil but also a program to display and encourage tolerance and equality. In addition to the event, October 8 is National Coming Out Day as declared by the Human Rights Campaign. The event organizers are encouraging everyone to wear blue on that day. Blue is the color of the Human Rights Campaign.
There will be activities where students can reflect and actively participate to make a change to limit and eventually prevent events such as these from happening in the future. There will also be computers where students can make a person smile by making a creative picture on "The Trevor Project" website; writing letters of support for Chris Armstrong, the University of Michigan student body president who has been targeted by homophobic Michigan assistant attorney general Andrew Shirvell. Students can also participate by signing the Rachel's Challenge Pledge, viewing a slideshow concerning the plight of these teenagers as well as information about suicide, harassment, and bullying, and writing reflections about the events.
The idea for this event stemmed from the concerns of students from one of KU’s residence halls and is being planned with the support of other student-run groups on campus.
