Happy National Coming Out Day!

October 11, 2012 is National Coming Out Day!

Please, if someone comes out to you today about their gender identity or sexual orientation, offer them support and celebration. Below are some websites that might offer a little information about the day, tips on “coming out”, and what you can do as an ally for someone who has just came out. (P.S. It is always nice to give a card to someone if they come out.) Also, we have included some dates for this month that are happening in the LGBTQQ community. Please check them out if you have some time available.)

La Cage Aux Folles Auditions

In June 2013, Steel River Playhouse in Pottstown, PA is taking the unusual step of producing LA CAGE AUX FOLLES. I use the term “unusual” because this is a work that is rarely done outside of Broadway or a National Tour setting. I believe LA CAGE is rarely mounted because it is exceedingly difficult to cast and also because of the gay themes of the work.

At Steel River, we often seek material that is accessible and at the same time challenging and thought provoking, as a means of building community. For example, we just closed NEXT TO NORMAL (dealing with bi-polar and schizophrenia mental health issues), and past productions include HAIRSPRAY(bullying, body image, race relations), QUILTERS (women’s studies), RAGTIME, SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION, and A RAISIN IN THE SUN (race and class issues), and upcoming are producing INTIMATE APPAREL (race, class and gender issues), among many others.

As part of producing LA CAGE, we are reaching out to the gay community to help us with this production. It is our hope that some of your members may be interested in AUDITIONING, and others may want to come to a performance as a GROUP EVENT.

AUDITIONS for LA CAGE are Oct 13, 15, 20, 22, 23 by appointment. We are seeking actors, singers and dancers for all roles including Les Cagelles (drag performers at La Cage aux Folles, each with strong individual characterization). Interested parties are asked to contactcasting@steelriver.org for full information on roles and audition prep, and to schedule an appointment.

Rehearsals  are  evenings/weekends, starting late March.

Performances - 3 weekends, June 6th – 23rd (Thurs @ 7:30 pm, Fri & Sat @ 8:00 pm, Sun @ 3:00 pm)

There is no pay for this production; however, housing and small travel stipend possible depending on role and actor location.
